Advanced Instrumentation Facility

Advanced Instrumentation Facility (AIF) is a specialized central research facility which houses about 12 advanced sophisticated state-of-the-art instruments for research in the areas of physical, environmental, biological, allied and inter-disciplinary sciences. In addition to the instrumentation, the AIF is also equipped with a dedicated state-of-the-art clean room facility with very low level of dust, airborne particles of Class 100 workbench and Class 1000 room area, for the initial handling and processing of the coastal marine samples. It caters to the multidisciplinary research focus of the different divisions at NCSCM viz, Futuristic Research Division (FTR), Coastal Environment Impact Assessment Division (CIA) and Conservation of Coastal and Marine Resources (CMR).

Analytical Capabilities

:

  • Separation and quantification of organic biomarkers (amino acids, fatty acids, lipids, alkanes, sterols etc.) in marine sediment samples.
  • Identification of molecular structures of target organic compounds in coastal and marine sediments.
  • For high sensitivity, high precision elemental and its isotopic quantification in environmental samples.
  • For non-destructive and relatively fast analysis of major and minor elements.
  • To quantify greenhouse gases (CO2, CH4, N2O) in trace amounts from the coastal ecosystems.
  • For studying structure and physical features of marine environmental samples.

    To determine the chemical composition of a wide variety of sample types including solids, liquids, slurries and loose powders. It can analyze elements from beryllium to uranium in concentration ranges from 100 wt% to sub-ppm levels.
