Microbiology and Biotechnology Facility

The Microbiology and Biotechnology facility at NCSCM offers a wide range of resources and support that assist scientists and researchers in monitoring and solving marine environmental issues. The major focus area includes:

Coral-Microbe Association

  • Investigation on functional characteristics of coral-microbe dynamics in response to Environmental stresses (eg; temperature, pH, salinity)
  • Reconstruction of broader network between microbial communities and metabolomics of beneficial and pathogenic microbes associated with corals
  • Extraction of novel compounds from commensal bacteria that inhibit coral pathogens

Oil pollution and Hydrocarbonoclastic bacteria

  • Isolation of potential hydrocarbonoclastic bacteria from oil polluted marine environments
  • Functional dynamics of microbial communities and fate of oil in the marine ecosystem
  • Formulation of oil degrading bacterial consortia for bioremediation processes

Inventorisation and database creation on microbial diversity along Indian Coast Consortium

  • Formation of a knowledge base to offer broad spectrum information about the coastal microbes which will provide deeper insights into the microbial diversity, their temporal and spatial variation, and changing profile with respect to climate change

DNA Barcoding

  • Application of taxonomic methods for identification of an unknown/novel marine organism with the pre-existing classification that aid in development of coastal and marine biodiversity integration network
